I walked around my campus today and sat down to study for a standardized exam I will be taking for grad school soon. It was at a cafe and right in front of me in line was this guy who was wearing the shirt for a sorority formal. Now for those of you unfamiliar with how it works, often times sororities and fraternities that throw events will make T-shirts of those events and sell them at the event to all who are invited.
In college, this is more or less the ultimate form of social proof. If you were invited to the formal of a top tier sorority and wear the shirt? You are perceived as a higher value guy right off the bat. As someone who didn't have any luck with the Greek scene during his college days, this is a big nananabooboo from the college top 20%. Just seeing the shirt made so many lonely memories of college come right back and hit me.
The fact that the guys got into something so exclusive and higher value while you did not.
Sometimes, I wish something like this existed in the adult world where I could wear a certain shirt from an exclusive high value event or do something to signal to other guys in the area that my life kicks ass while theirs sucks. Man I desperately wish there was something high value and exclusive like Greek Life in the real world where you could literally shove your success in the face of others and make them miserable for it.
